Criminal Law and Its Processes: Cases and Materials, Eleventh Edition by Sanford H. Kadish, Stephen J. Schulhofer, and Rachel E. Barkow — Published by Aspen Publishing (Aspen Casebook Series)

The definitive casebook in criminal law for American law schools, now in its Eleventh Edition. This landmark text covers all the doctrinal material and key criminal justice policy questions an instructor may want to explore in either a one-semester or year-long course in criminal law. Continuing in the tradition of its best-selling predecessors, the Eleventh Edition provides students not only with a cohesive policy framework through which they can understand and examine the use of criminal laws as a means for social control, but also analytic tools to understand and apply important criminal law doctrines. The book's central focus is on helping students develop a nuanced understanding of the underlying principles, rules, and policy rationales that inform all criminal laws.

The text spans the full range of criminal law topics — including the purposes and limits of criminal punishment, the elements of offenses, mental state requirements, homicide, rape, theft, attempt, conspiracy, complicity, and defenses — drawing on carefully selected cases, scholarly commentary, and model penal code materials that together build a coherent and challenging legal education.

Sanford H. Kadish was the Alexander F. and May T. Morrison Professor of Law, Emeritus, at the University of California, Berkeley, and one of the most eminent criminal law scholars of the twentieth century. Stephen J. Schulhofer, formerly of the University of Chicago Law School, is the Robert B. McKay Professor of Law at New York University, one of the nation's most distinguished scholars of criminal justice with more than fifty scholarly articles and six books to his name. Rachel E. Barkow is the Segal Family Professor of Regulatory Law and Policy and Faculty Director of the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law at NYU, whose scholarship focuses on criminal law and the administration of criminal justice. Together, they have produced the leading casebook in the field.
